About the Artist
Living in a world that is far from perfect, instead of showing the viewer what is, Peter Liepke is far more interested in the aspect of showing the viewer what could be.
In his artist statement Liepke states, "Maybe my visual philosophy completely contradicts the medium of photography itself, but if we don't hold true to our vision then why bother doing it?"
Liepke prints his photographs of New York City in two handmade formats, Gum Bichromate and Platinum/Palladium. His use of these two arcane printing methods allow him some creative liberties to soften an often-photographed city with a more intimate cinematic approach. His photographic works have often been compared to charcoal drawings or etchings, and evoke the feeling of seeing NYC again... but for the first time.
Born in Minneapolis Minnesota, Peter Liepke's career spans over 30 years in the business of photography. Starting first in Los Angeles in studio commercial advertising photography, and then moving on to New York City as an editorial and celebrity portrait photographer.
His photographs have been exhibited widely on both East, and West coasts, and in galleries across the United States. His images have been published nationally, & internationally in publications such as TIME, Newsweek, PDN, GRAPHIS, B&W Magazine, Silvershotz, SCHWARZWEISS, Market, View Camera, book publishers Simon & Schuster, Random House, Alfred Knopf, Double Day, and many other publications too numerous to mention.
